Single Review: Blackjack Billy- "Get Some"

Two singles in, and I'm already sick of Blackjack Billy.

I mean, this isn't all bad. It's not the "The Booze Cruise". And that's it in terms of positives.

I went in with low expectations, and they were met. It's obnoxious from the opening over-the-top guitar licks, and it's downhill from there listing of cliches all the way to the godawful chorus where they sing "hey honey, shakin' that money maker".

This equation sums my thoughts perfectly actually:

Annoying production + cringe worthy lyrics + sub-par vocals = "Get Some"/Blackjack Billy in general.

Sorry if I sound like a hater/ranter but seriously. Stop.

Single Review: Rodney Atkins- "Doin' It Right"

This is the Rodney Atkins' we know and love. After three consecutive mediocre singles, Atkins brings us arguably his best single to date.

"Doin' It Right" is the style that brought us "If You're Going Through Hell", "Watching You", "Cleaning This Gun", etc., and established Atkins as a radio staple. Lyrically, this is bursting with positive energy. Not in a "party, beer, chicks, trucks" happy, fun way but in a "life is awesome" way, a refreshing change of pace.

Vocally Atkins holds his own. He's never gonna be a powerhouse vocalist, but he can convey emotion into a song. Production wise, it's also solid, as it allows the listener to enjoy the lyric and the accessible melody.

It has potential to be a smash, I sure hope it is.

Single Review: Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert- "We Were Us"

Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert, two of my favorite artists, collaborating on a single. You can imagine my excitement when I heard about this, and for the most part, it lives up to expectations.

Their voices mesh well together, and they both feel fairly engaged in the lyrics making for an enjoyable performance.

The lyrics are about two people reminiscing on their teenage love. Combined with an excellent melody, it makes for an engaging listen.

However, my one major gripe is the production on the chorus goes a bit over the top. If that chorus was produced like the rest of the song this could have been one of the best of the year.

But even with the over-produced chorus, it is still an enjoyable single.

Single Review: Eric Paslay- "Friday Night"

It seems odd that a songwriter of Paslay's popularity, with smash hits such as "Barefoot Bluejean Night" (Jake Owen) and "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" (Eli Young Band) (NOTE: This song was also recorded as part of Lady Antebellum's 2011 Own The Night album) has never had success as a solo artist.

With "Friday Night" Paslay has likely found his first solo hit. And he does a hell of a job with it. I found the Lady A's version to be cluttered and loud. Paslay's version is filled with prominent banjo, keeping it firmly in pop-country territory without going over the top with pop-ness.

Because of the uncluttered arrangement, Paslay's soulful voice is able to be heard. The chorus is an earworm if I ever heard one and the melody is great.

It's not a groundbreaking lyric but Paslay and his record label do a great job with what will likely be Paslay's first top 10 hit.

Single Review: Tim McGraw- "Southern Girl"

This new Tim McGraw single does have some things going for it.

The first one is a stripped down production, the second is a relaxed, natural performance.

Unfortunately, that's all there is.

The lyrics are about, surprise, a southern girl. Like seriously, why do all girls in country songs have to be from the south. Why not from Japan or Mexico or something. At least that would be entertaining.

It features every cliché you can name, from her mama teaching her how to act to cutoff jeans. Then you have the talk back voice from chorus to verse saying "southern girl rock my world" (worst "rhyme" in music in my opinion).

It's not a station changer but it's not exactly great either.

Southern girls are good. What I just said in 4 words Tim McGraw felt the need to say in 3 minutes.
