Single Review: Zac Brown Band - "Loving You Easy"

The Zac Brown Band’s latest album, Jekyll & Hyde was full of many songs that didn’t seem to fit into the band’s wheelhouse. There were songs that ranged from Pop to Hard Rock to Country and even Jazz. Today I sit down to talk about the third single from the project titled “Loving You Easy”.

The song shuffles along with a Motown-esque feel to it. In the song, Brown talks about how his woman is right for him and how she makes “loving her easy” with all of her qualities. The theme itself has been played out to death and the lyrics really do nothing to add any type of unique feel to the song. It is also incredibly short, barely playing over 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Granted, these type of short songs are quickly becoming the new trend at Country radio. However, when the main focus of a song such as this is to be a catchy sing-along, the length barely gives listeners enough time to remember the song.

Now, when i said that there were songs from Jekyll & Hyde that didn’t quite fit into the band’s wheelhouse, this is one of the songs I was talking about. The song itself isn’t terrible, and is somewhat catchy. That being said however, the Zac Brown Band has proved that they can do better than this. A couple of flaws make this song go from “good” to simply “ok”.

Single Review: Luke Bryan- "Kick The Dust Up"

Count me among the people who thought we'd see some development from Luke Bryan after he finished up his infamous 'Spring Break' series, and also count me among those immensely disappointed that this is what we ended up getting.

I'll admit, I don't find "Kick The Dust Up", the lead single for Bryan's upcoming album titled Kill the Lights, to be nearly as terrible as others do. Yes, the lyrics are embarrassing and cheesy, mixing the worst of bro-country with the worst of country-pride anthems while making little-to-no sense as proper English sentences. Yes, the production is heavy handed and grating. Yes, the melody plods along during the verses, lacking the punch that made a song like "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)" memorable. Yes, his performance lacks the personality that made a tune like "Drunk on You" work. But  the hooks littered throughout the chorus are strong enough to save it from being among the worst country music has to offer over the past handful of years, despite the rest of the song being nothing short of a mess.

"Kick The Dust Up" isn't the worst thing ever, but I was expecting growth from a 38-year-old man entering his prime as the biggest star in mainstream country music. This is not growth. In fact, this could very well be regression, and is really nothing more than a last ditch attempt to save the dying trend that is bro-country. This isn't just a bad song, it's a letdown.

Single Review: Chase Bryant- "Little Bit of You"

After debuting with "Take It on Back", a top 10 hit supported by iHeartRadio's On the Verge program, Chase Bryant is back with an energetic ditty called "Little Bit of You".

On the surface, it reads like yet another run of the mill, escapism love song that's safe enough for radio and not nearly egregious enough to offend anybody. However, between Bryant and his producers hitting all the right marks from a technical standpoint and the songwriters making enough of an effort to not craft a composition that comes off as degrading or cliché, "Little Bit of You" is a very respectable tune.

The production is country enough to defend it's spot on country radio playlists, but modern enough to be a hit, with enough guitar to drive it along at a healthy pace. Bryant delivers an energized production, and the lyrics, while not deep, lean more towards the Brad Paisley side of the uptempo love song spectrum than the Chase Rice side.

Is it earth-shattering? No, but it's entertaining, and it's something that at least mildly represents country music. I'll take it.
